North Dakota produces less corn, more soybeans

FARGO, N.D. — North Dakota farmers produced less corn but more soybeans in 2009.

The U.S. Agriculture Department in its annual crop production report says the state’s corn crop at 208 million bushels was 27 percent below the record 2008 crop, but North Dakota soybeans were up 10 percent to 116 million bushels. That was the second-highest production on record, behind 122 million bushels in 2006.

Production of oil sunflowers in North Dakota was down 13 percent from the previous year, while canola was up 2 percent and flaxseed up 28 percent.

North Dakota farmers set records with dry peas and lentils, while sugar beet production at 4.8 million tons was down from 5.1 million tons in 2008.
