NEW YORK — The following stocks were among those that moved substantially or traded heavily Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market:

Jones Apparel Group Inc., down $1.09 at $14.24
The retailer said its fourth-quarter profit may fall short and that inventories are under tight control.
Mead Johnson Nutrition Co., up $1.17 at $45.17

The pharmaceutical company plans to ax 8,000 more jobs by 2014 to cut costs as it reported disappointing fourth quarter earnings.
Franklin Resources Inc., down $3.55 at $100.33
The company said its fiscal first-quarter profit nearly tripled as the market rally and investors bought more of its mutual funds.
3M Co., down $1.55 at $80.75
The maker household names like Post-its and Scotch tape is signaling that a steady economic recovery is far from certain in 2010.
NASDAQ:
Qualcomm Inc., down $6.72 at $40.48
The chip maker scaled back its sales forecast for 2010 and said it is seeing only a “subdued” economic recovery.
Symantec Corp., down $1.20 at $17.41
The security software company posted a third-quarter profit, but its outlook for the fiscal fourth quarter disappointed investors.
Heartland Express Inc., down 68 cents at $14.09
Analysts lowered their expectations for the trucking company’s earnings this year after it reported that fourth-quarter profit dropped.
