Deal reached in NYC doormen talks over contract

NEW YORK — An agreement has been reached between New York City doormen and building owners, averting a threatened midnight strike.

Union spokesman Kwame Patterson says they reached a deal Wednesday that includes a nearly 10 percent wage increase over four years and no cuts in benefits for workers.

The union and building owners’ association had until 12:01 a.m. to hammer out a deal. Patterson says the agreement was reached at 12:10 a.m. It still has to be ratified.

Nearly 1 million New York City apartment dwellers rely on doormen and other building workers to make life in a high-rise run smoothly.

The union and the Realty Advisory Board that represents building owners were fighting over wages and benefits, including health care, sick days and overtime rules.
