AHMEDABAD - A city-based pharmaceutical company Tuesday claimed to have become the first company in India to introduce a cure for tinnitus — the perception of sound within the human ear in the absence of corresponding external sound.

Lincoln Pharmaceuticals Limited (LPL), Rs.130 crore annual turnover company, has entered into an agreement with Phafag AG, Switzerland, for its caroverine molecule for the treatment of tinnitus which is estimated to affect 47 million people in India, said company’s MD Mahendra Patel here.

According to Patel, tinnitus is estimated to affect about 35-45 percent of adults over 17 years of age at some point of time in their lives as a temporary or permanent disturbance.

The constant buzzing sound in the ear can interfere with sleep, quiet activities and other normal daily activities causing depression, anxiety and insomnia in the long run.
