TOULOUSE - European passenger plane company Airbus has reported that it delivered a record 510 new airplanes in 2010, the 40th anniversary year of the consortium.

The deliveries, surpassing the previous one-year delivery record of 498 planes, gave Airbus a 52 percent of the world market share last year, outpacing US arch-rival Boeing.

At the same time, the 1970-founded company booked orders for 574 planes, more than double the 2009 figure of 271.

“2010 was all in all a rather good year,” Airbus chief executive Tom Enders told a press conference, putting the company’s annual turnover volume at around 30 billion euros ($39 billion).

The value of the 574 plane orders last year was around $74 billion.

By comparison, Boeing in 2009 booked 530 new plane orders last year, while delivering 462 planes.

With business projected to be strong again in 2011, Airbus was planning to hire 3,000 more employees, the company said.
