KOLKATA - Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia Friday batted for foreign direct investment (FDI) in the farm sector in India, saying “modernisation of agricultural marketing is very important”.

“Farmers are getting very low prices for their products and consumers are paying higher prices. So modernisation of agricultural marketing is very important. To modernise we allow FDI what is wrong with it? he told reporters here.

Our need is for across the board modernising of agricultural marketing. We need investment in cold storage chains, the economist said.

FDI will increase. It will not damage the economy, he added.
