Longtime publisher of Newport Daily News to retire

NEWPORT, R.I. — The publisher of the Newport Daily News is retiring after three decades in the position.

The newspaper says Albert “Buck” Sherman Jr., who succeeded his father in 1980, will retire at the end of the month. He is 65.

Assistant Publisher William Lucey III will take over as publisher.

Sherman is a member of the Rhode Island Journalism Hall of Fame and past president of the New England Newspaper Association. He presided over the newspaper as it added color photography, launched a Web site and received regional newspaper awards.

The Daily News is published by the Edward A. Sherman Publishing Company, which also publishes Newport Life Magazine and several weekly newspapers.
