In SC, simple diversions blunt downturn’s impact

MARION, S.C. — In places across America hit by the Great Recession more people seem to be worshiping, playing recreational sports and visiting the library.

It seems free and inexpensive diversions are helping folks forget their worries.

Library director Connie Harrison says the Ida Public Library In Belvidere, Illinois, is busy with many people checking out DVDs because it’s cheaper than buying or visiting the video store.

In Marion, South Carolina, Mayor Rodney Berry, is a deacon at the Marion Baptist Church. He sees fewer empty pews Sundays and says registration for city sports leagues is up.

Across the state in Chester County, the local arts council reports one of its best years in recent memory with folks attending free events like book signings and art exhibits.
