Mayawati urges Pranab to help raise UP’s credit-deposit ratio

LUCKNOW - Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has urged Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to help expand the banking network in the state and raise its credit-deposit ratio, which is far below the national average.

In a letter to the finance minister, she expressed concern over the “extremely low” credit-deposit ratio which she said was “adversely affecting” the development of the country’s most populous state.

Mayawati requested Mukherjee to issue necessary directives to all banks to enhance UP’s credit-deposit ratio that stood at just 48, far down the national average of 71.

The letter was read out by Health Minister Anant Kumar Misra at a meeting of chief ministers of northern states and heads of public sector banks, chaired by Mukherjee in Chandigarh Tuesday.

Mayawati has stressed the need for expanding the banking network in UP. “All villages with a population of more than 2,000 need to have banking outlets”, she said.
