Western Union, Family Dollar partner on transfers

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Western Union Co. said Monday it will offer a new service that allows customers to buy pre-paid money transfer cards at Family Dollar store locations.

The payment services company and Family Dollar Inc. said the goCASH service will be available at 6,500 Family Dollar stores starting this fall.

Shoppers using the service buy cards in the checkout lane in three different amounts — $50, $100 or $200 — to be sent internationally or domestically. Once people have the cards, they call Western Union to initiate the transfer. The money can be picked up at any Western Union agent around the world, but not at Family Dollar locations.

Last December, Western Union, based in Englewood, Colo., announced an agreement to offer goCASH through InComm, the industry leader in stored-value gift and prepaid cards.

Family Dollar, which is based in Matthews, N.C., has more than 6,700 locations in 44 states.

Shares of Western Union rose 37 cents, or 2.3 percent, to close at $16.68, while shares of Family Dollar closed up 23 cents to $39.70.
