Relaxation for Mizos joining central paramilitary forces

AIZAWL - The union home ministry has given a special exemption in education and height for the Mizo tribals intending to join the various central paramilitary forces (CPMF), it was announced here Thursday.

“Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, responding to a request by Mizoram Governor Lt.Gen (Rtd) M.M. Lakhera, approved the relaxation in education and physical standards in respect of tribal candidates in Mizoram for recruitment in various CPMFs,” an official release said.

“The required qualification for entry into CPMFs is reduced to class eight standard from Madhyamik (matriculation) standard and a height requirement for male candidates is reduced from 162.5 centimetres to 160 centimetres for tribals,” the release said, citing Chidambaram’s letter to the governor.

“The special dispensation would be enforced with immediate effect for a period of one year. The position would be reviewed after one year based on the outcome of the recruitment process for 2010-11 fiscal,” the release added.

Tribals constitute over 94 percent of mountainous Mizoram’s one million population.
