SINGAPORE - The global commercial aviation industry would need more than a million pilots and mechanics within the next 20 years with the Asia-Pacific leading the demand, US planemaker Boeing Co. said Thursday.

The industry would require 466,650 pilots and 596,500 maintenance personnel worldwide by 2029 because of strong demand for aircraft, Boeing said in a statement released in Singapore. Of those, 180,600 pilots and 220,000 mechanics would be needed in the Asia-Pacific region, it said.

Currently, about 233,000 pilots and more than 100,000 mechanics and engineers work for airlines around the globe, the company estimated.

China was predicted to have the greatest need for pilots and maintenance personnel within Asia, it said.

On average, global airlines would need 23,300 new pilots and 30,000 new maintenance personnel per year from 2010 to 2029, Boeing said in its latest crew assessment forecast.
