HONG KONG - Fast food chain McDonald’s said Tuesday it is to host weddings in its Hong Kong restaurants for couples who want to tie the knot with a fast-food feast.

The US chain said it was taking reservations from Tuesday for wedding parties of 50 to 100 people at three of its Hong Kong restaurants from Jan 1.

Wedding packages are expected to run to hundreds of US dollars per party, rather than thousands of US dollars for a normal wedding, and will include features like a McDonald’s apple pie wedding cake.

Couples will have to supply their own registrar to conduct the wedding and make do with soft drinks for the toast as none of Hong Kong’s McDonald’s restaurants are licensed.

A spokeswoman for McDonald’s told DPA the three restaurants would host wedding ceremonies as well as engagement parties and wedding anniversary parties.

They are the first McDonald’s restaurants in the world to offer specific wedding programmes and expect to extend it to more Hong Kong restaurants if it is a success, the spokeswoman said.

Many Hong Kong couples met or had their first dates at McDonald’s, she said, adding, “that makes it particularly meaningful and memorable to hold a wedding party there”.

McDonald’s opened its first Hong Kong restaurant in 1975 and now has more than 200 in the city of seven million - one of the highest densities of McDonald’s outlets in the world.
