Last phase of census starts in Delhi

NEW DELHI - The second and last phase of the 2011 Census for population enumeration began Wednesday in the national capital. The head count started with the enumeration of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

After signing the enumeration sheet, Dikshit said: “Indian census has been the most credible source of planning and it is the vital exercise involving collection of information on various aspects like demography, economic activity, literacy and education.”

She also asked people to provide all information and cooperate with the enumerators to make the exercise a success.

The 2011 Census is conducted in two phases — one is on the house listing operation and the other is population enumeration.

The house listing operation along with collection of information for preparation of a National Population Register started in Delhi in April to and concluded in September last year.

The population enumeration, the second phase, is being conducted simultaneously all over the country till Feb 28.

Around 5,000 supervisors have been deployed to take the census. About 30,000 enumerators will visit each and every house to collect information about each individual.

The enumerators will revisit all the households March 1 to 5 to take into account any death, birth after Feb 28.
