Srinagar airport to activate low visibility landing aid

SRINAGAR - An Instrumentation Landing System (ILS) will soon be available at the Srinagar International Airport to help pilots land in low visibility, an official said Tuesday.
At present, the minimum visibility that must be available for landing of an aircraft at the Srinagar airport is two kilometres. The visibility is extremely poor at the airport during the winter months due to fog. Once the ILS is functional at the airport, the pilots would need much lesser visibility to safely land aircraft,” said the official of the Airports Authority of India here.
Although the ILS had been installed at the Srinagar airport two years back, the decision to calibrate the system and make it functional was taken recently, an official source said.
Besides functioning as an international airport for civilian flights, Srinagar airport is also used by the Indian Air Force.
