BHUBANESWAR - The Orissa government Wednesday approved setting up of five power projects in the state, an official said.

The projects, with a total capacity addition of 10,500 MW, received the nod from the High Level Clearance Authority (HLCA) chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik.

“We have approved five new power projects. The combined capacity is around 10,500 MW with a total investment of about Rs.50,000 crore,” said Saurabh Garg, state industries secretary.

The state requires about 3,000 megawatt of power in peak season and 2200 MW of power in the off peak season.

“With coming up of these power projects we will have enough power by 2011-12. We hope to become a power surplus state,” said Pradeep Jena, state power secretary.

The five new projects would come up in Sundergarh, Rengali, Nayagarh, Redhakhol, Birmaharajpur.

“The new power plants would adopt super-critical technology so that there will less pollution. There will also be lesser requirement of coal and water,” Jena added.
