Rs.305.34 crore plan to clean Ganga at Allahabad approved

NEW DELHI - A Rs.305.34 crore proposal to clean up river Ganga at Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh where river Yamuna converges with it was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) Friday.

“The CCEA (Friday) approved the proposal of sewerage and non-sewerage schemes for pollution abatement of river Ganga at Allahabad under the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) of the ministry of environment and forests at an estimated cost of Rs.305.34 crore,” a government statement said.

The project cost will be shared on 70:30 basis between the central and state government. While the centre will give Rs.213.74 crore, government of Uttar Pradesh will provide Rs. 91.60 crore for the project.

The project aims at minimising pollution of the river and improving its eco-system in the city.

“The pilgrims using the river water at Allahabad for religious purposes, including during the Maha Kumbh in 2013, will also be benefitted. In addition, general hygiene and sanitation conditions in Allahabad will be significantly improved. It will also add to the aesthetics of the area. The project will be completed within 34 months,” the statement said.
