GANDHINAGAR - The multi-product special economic zone at Dahej in Bharuch district of Gujarat has been rated as one of the 25 best economic zones in the world.

A global survey of 700-odd “free economic zones of the future” by Foreign Direct Investment, the bi-monthly magazine published by the Financial Times Group, London, has ranked Dahej at the 23rd spot.

Gujarat government spokesperson and Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas and Industry Minister Saurabh Patel announced this here Wednesday.

Situated off the Gulf of Cambay, Dahej SEZ is spread over 1,700 hectares and has attracted investment of nearly Rs.20,000-crore. It has provided employment to 22,000 people.

Following the enactment of the Gujarat Special Investment Region Act, Dahej has been notified as petrochemicals and petroleum investment region (PCPIR). When fully functional, Dahej PCPIR, falling on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), is likely to touch export target of Rs.62,000-crore.

Vyas said the survey was first of its kind. It put Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade at the top, followed by Dubai Free Airport Zone.

The ranking was based on eight parameters that include potential, inward investment, business expansion, cost effectiveness and facilities.
