BANGALORE - Biocon has set up a new comprehensive care division to provide affordable solutions to hospital acquired infections, the leading biotech firm said Tuesday.

“The care division has been set up to counter the growing challenge of hospital acquired infections by providing affordable and specialised solutions to the affected patients,” Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar Shaw said in a statement here.

As the company’s fifth division after diabetology, oncology, nephrology and cardiology, the new unit will use five homegrown drugs for treating critical illnesses such as septicemia, nosocomial pneuomonia and other acute hospital infections.

“There is a perceptible increase in hospital acquired infections with respect to critical care illnesses in India. This often requires treatment with specialised anti-infectives,” Shaw asserted.

With the motto of “improving life”, the care division will extend reach of the company’s branded formulations to the critical care area.
