Summary Box: Malaysia carmaker Proton posts profit

RESULTS: Malaysian national carmaker Proton posted a 55 percent jump in quarterly profit and is taking steps to make it easier for the state-owned company to ally with foreign automakers.

BOTTOM LINE: The maker of the Waja and Pesona sedans and the Exora seven-seater multipurpose vehicle posted net income of 84.7 million ringgit ($27 million) for the April-June quarter. Revenue rose 24 percent to 2.3 billion ringgit ($735 million) on stronger-than-expected car sales.

PLANS: Proton aims to set up four business units as part of a restructuring. The car maker is under pressure to bolster exports for its long-term survival, and analysts say it needs to find a global partner to survive in the long-run.
