NEW DELHI - The Panchayati Raj Institutions as the units of local self government will be active partners in rolling out the unique identification (UID) programme –Aadhaar– to ensure accountable local governance.

This was stated by the ministry of panchayati raj and the Unique Identification Authority of India Wednesday.

There are around 2,818,290 elected representatives of panchayats in 23 states and six Union Territories who can act as natural grass root leaders and generate awareness bout the UID programme.

Inability to prove identity is one of the major barriers that prevents the poor from accessing the benefits and subsidies available under various developmental and welfare programmes.

Better delivery of services through better access and inclusion of the poor, marginalised and the underprivileged is a major objective of the UID programme.
