Delhi to start gas-based power project

NEW DELHI - The Delhi government Monday decided to launch the phase II of the gas-based Pragati Power project to generate 750 MW of electricity at Bamnauli in the capital’s southwest.
The cabinet at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit noted that the demand for power in the capital will increase on an average by 8 to 10 percent per annum.
“Keeping this in view, the government is keen to ensure generation of 50 percent of demand from Delhi-based power projects,” a government official said, adding that the project will be fully commissioned within a period of 28 months from the date of issue of letter of award.
“About 3.5 million metric standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD) gas will be provided by the Gas Authority of India (GAIL) from RIL’s offshore blocks in Krishna-Godavari Basin for the plant,” the official added.
It has been decided to appoint NTPC as project management consultant on terms and conditions similar to Bawana power project.
The official said the city government has been successful in initiating three major projects in the last three years - PPP-III at Bawana (1,500 MW), Aravali Power Project at Jhajjar (750 MW) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) at Dadri (980 MW).
Pragati Power Corporation is a generation company of the state government.
Apart from the Bamnauli plant, the government is banking on the 1,500 MW Bawana plant, the 750 MW Aravalli plant and the 950 MW Dadri plant to meet the power requirements.
