Passenger traffic up 19.3 percent from January to August

NEW DELHI - Domestic air passenger traffic grew
over 19 percent between January and August as against the same period last year, the civil aviation ministry said Thursday.
“Passengers carried by domestic airlines from January-August, 2010 were 33.9 crore as against 28.42 crore in the corresponding period of year 2009 thereby registering a growth of over 19.3 percent,” said the ministry in a statement.
The ministry also said that the passenger traffic in August fell marginally from 40.84 lakh in July to 39.89 lakh. The month is considered to be a lean period for air travel.
“The total domestic passengers carried by the scheduled Airlines of India in the month of August, 2010 were 39.89 lakh,” the statement said.
National carrier Air India led the domestic travel segment carrying 7.30 lakh passengers, while Jet Airways and its low cost airline Jet Lite flew 7.79 lakh and 2.99 lakh passengers respectively.
