CHENNAI - Car-makers Ford India and General Motors were nearly neck and neck last month in terms of their sales volumes.

While the city-based Ford India sold 8,380 units last month, the General Motors logged a sale of 8,617 units. During September 2009 Ford India sold 3,405 cars and General Motors 7,654 vehicles.

The quantum jump in numbers for Ford India is mainly triggered by its new compact car Figo.

According to Ford Indias president and managing director Michael Boneham, Ford will soon roll out 50,000 units.

Meanwhile, the September sales for the General Motors were primarily driven by its small cars Chevrolet Beat, Chevrolet Spark, accounting for a total volume of 5,177 units. The company sold 2,753 units of Beat and 2,424 units of Spark.

The sales numbers of other models are 1,578 units of the Chevrolet Tavera, 847 units of the Chevrolet Cruze, 325 units of Chevrolet Aveo, 287 units of Chevrolet Aveo U-VA, 236 units of Chevrolet Optra and 167 units of the Chevrolet Captiva.

General Motors India vice president P. Balendran said: We are excited by the overwhelming response to Chevrolet Beat, Spark and Cruze.
