Nearly 5 lakh tonnes of pulses imported for distribution

NEW DELHI - Various state enterprises have inked deals to import 4.84 lakh tonnes of pulses this fiscal, the ministry of consumers affairs, food and public distribution system said Friday.

“Of the total contracted quantity, 3.19 lakh tonnes of pulses have already arrived, while 1.68 lakh tonnes have been disposed from the stocks with these agencies till Oct 25, said the ministry in a statement.

The enterprises, which have signed deals to import pulses are MMTC, PEC (Projects Equipment Commodities Ltd), STC (State Trading Corporation) and NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India).

The ministry said that as on Oct 25, 1.56 lakh tonnes of pulses have been supplied to Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab for distribution under the public distribution system (PDS).

In 2009-10, over 2.5 lakh tonnes of imported pulses were supplied to these states for distribution through PDS.
