BANGALORE - IT bellwether Wipro became the first Indian firm to join Greenpeace’s Cool IT Leaderboard rankings for its commitment to energy efficiency, the company said Friday.

“We were the only Indian company to be part of the Cool IT Leaderboard rankings for our transparent mitigation plant that frontloads energy efficiency and direct renewable energy purchase and installation,” Wipro chief sustainability officer Anurag Behar said in a statement here.

The Cool IT Leaderboard rankings were released during the recent global climate change summit at Cancun in Mexico.

The Leaderboard evaluates top IT firms for their efforts to provide economy-wide climate solutions, reduce emissions from their operations and lobby for science-based climate and energy policies.

“Our initiatives include working with education and civil society networks on sustainability programmes, engaging with government bodies to shape policies on green, minimising our internal footprint on energy, water and waste and providing products and solutions to enable customers become greener,” Behar said.
