Jayalalithaa blames government on closed dyeing units

CHENNAI - Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa Saturday blamed the DMK government for the closure of around 750 dyeing units in Tirupur.
The units were closed following Madras High Court orders on charges of polluting the Noyyal river.
“Had the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) brought together the farmers along the Noyyal river and the Tirupur dyeing units and ensured that the latter achieve zero discharge levels, the current problem would not have arisen,” Jayalalithaa said in a statement.
The high court in 2006 ordered that all dyeing units should get zero discharge certificate from the pollution control board by July 31, 2007 and that the board should fine the violators.
The court in 2008 ordered the board to remove additional equipment installed by the dyeing units. The Supreme Court upheld the high court order.
In January, hearing a contempt petition, the Madras High Court ordered the closure of the dyeing units for not having the zero discharge certificate.
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board disconnected power supply to the units.
