Boston mayor sworn in, vows to bolster economy

BOSTON — Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is touting his successes and promising to move the city’s economy forward and improve its schools as he begins a record fifth term in office.

Menino was sworn in Monday in the Great Hall at Faneuil Hall.

The mayor said he wants to transform areas of the city into “innovation districts” to promote emerging fields, including biotech and green technology.

He also called for a “transformative progress in education.”

The 67-year-old Menino was first elected in 1993 and won his fifth four-year term in November.

The city’s second-longest serving mayor is Kevin White, who ran the city from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s.
