THIRUVANANTHAPURAM - V.P. Unnikrishnan, secretary of the Federation of Indian communities, Queensland (FICQ) has received two Australia Day Achievement Medals for his contribution to the society there.

Unnikrishnan, who is a native of this Kerala capital and has been settled in Brisbane for more than 10 years, said he won the Lord Mayor’s 2010 Australia Day Achievement Award last week.

“On 28th of January, I have been awarded the Australia Day medal from the Queensland government (Department of Transport and Main Roads). Both these awards are to recognise individuals who made noteworthy and outstanding contributions to the community and department over many years,” he told IANS in an email Monday.

Unnikrishnan has been working as the principal advisor in the Asset Management Branch of the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.

It was his road design at the Sydney Olympics which ensured smooth flow of traffic from the city of Sydney to the Sydney Olympics village.
