Nevada governor says hundreds of layoffs possible

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons says hundreds of layoffs are likely, possibly more, as the state grapples with a nearly $1 billion budget shortfall.

Gibbons on Tuesday met with a handful of state schools superintendents, who were told to expect around 10 percent budget cuts for the rest of the biennium that ends June 30, 2011.

But the governor told reporters he may propose deeper cuts for other state agencies.

Gibbons says his administration is still working on a plan but estimates as many as 300 state workers may be eliminated.

Such layoffs would be in addition to any jobs cut by local school districts or the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Gibbons will detail his plans and call for a special session in a televised speech Monday.
