Maine jobless rate rises to 8.2 percent in January
AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Labor Department says unemployment in Maine rose in January to 8.2 percent.
Commissioner Laura Fortman said Wednesday that January’s rate is up from December’s 8.1 percent rate and the 7.3 unemployment rate a year ago.
Fortman said there are 57,900 unemployed people in Maine, which is 6,500 more than a year ago.
She said about three-fourths of the job losses have occurred in the construction, manufacturing and retail sectors.
She said the only sectors with job gains were education and health services, and leisure and hospitality.
