Chhattisgarh ministers, legislators get salary hike

RAIPUR - On the concluding day of the budget session, Chhattisgarh assembly Friday passed two bills without a debate to increase the salary, allowances and other perks of all the ministers and the 90 legislators, putting an annual burden of over Rs.2 crore on the state exchequer.

The assembly passed a bill to amend the Ministers (Salary and Allowances) Act 1972 and increasing the ministers’ salary from existing Rs.1,500 per month to Rs.7,000 and to raise constituency allowance to Rs.8,000 from existing Rs.5,000 per month.

The chief minister will now get a daily allowance of Rs.1,125 while a cabinet minister will get an allowance of Rs.1,100.

The leader of opposition’s salary has also been increased from Rs.1,500 per month to Rs.7,000. He will also get a constituency allowance of Rs.8,000 per month and a daily allowance of Rs 1,100. A similar increase has been effected in the salary and allowances of the assembly speaker and the deputy speaker.

The assembly also passed the Salary, Allowances and Pension (Amendment) Bill 2010, that proposes to increase legislators’ salary to Rs.7,000 from the existing Rs.1,500 per month.

The members will also get a constituency allowance of Rs.8,000 per month, orderly allowance of Rs.5,000, a daily allowance of Rs.750 and a monthly medical allowance of Rs.2,500.
