Utah jobless rate rises to 7.3 percent in April

SALT LAKE CITY — Figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show Utah’s unemployment rate rose slightly to 7.3 percent in April from the previous month.

The Utah Department of Workforce Services also says the state has lost about 7,100 jobs over the past year, leaving total employment at nearly 1.19 million. The department issued the April figures on Thursday.

The Department of Workforce Services says it appears the U.S. economy has turned an economic corner and that the economic rebound also is taking root in Utah, where a modest recovery looks to have started.

The department says about 97,900 Utahns were considered unemployed in April. Last April the unemployment rate was 6.7 percent.

Utah’s unemployment rate for April remained well below the national figure of 9.9 percent. The state’s rate in March was 7.2 percent.
