GANDHINAGAR - Gujarat continued to maintain its top position in job placements through employment exchanges in India for the seventh consecutive year in 2009, Gujarat Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas said here Wednesday.

Quoting the latest annual report of the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment, the minister said that Gujarat provided jobs through the exchanges to 2.14 lakh people during 2009 as against 3.09 lakh by the entire country taken together.

“This amounts to a whopping 71.4 percent of the total vacancies being filled through employment exchanges in the state,” Vyas, who is the government spokesperson, told reporters.

The minister pointed out that Tamil Nadu which came second in the country was way behind Gujarat, providing jobs through exchanges to merely 22,000 people. Maharashtra came third with 10,800 and Andhra Pradesh fourth with just 1,300 placements.
