PANAJI - Bharathi Cement Corporation (BCC) Friday said it would produce five million tonnes of cement by the end of this fiscal by expanding its plant in Andhra Pradesh.

The company’s marketing director M Ravinder Reddy said the plant, which began operations in September 2009, currently manufactures 250 million tonnes of cement and another 250 million tonnes would be added in the last quarter of 2010.

Reddy said with the expansion in place, the plant will become one of the largest cement manufacturing units in Asia.

The company, a joint venture with VICAT, a major cement manufacturing company based in France, sells its product in eight states — Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Pondicherry, Andaman and Nicobar, and now in Goa.

Reddy said production of cement in India would be able to match consumption for the next two to three years.
