No plan to merge rail and union budget: Finance Ministry

NEW DELHI - The finance ministry Monday denied any plan to change the financial year from April-March to January-December and merge the railway and general budget as reported in a section of the media.

“With reference to a news item appearing in a certain section of the print media, it is clarified that there is no move in the ministry of finance, government of India for any change of financial year from April-March to January- December or for merger of the railway budget with the union budget, the ministry said in a statement.

A newspaper reported Monday that Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is set to recommend the clubbing of the railway budget with the general budget.

the railway budget is presented by the railway minister two days prior to the general budget. This practice has been continuing since 1924.
