Auction market for watches, jewels looking up

NEW DELHI - Jewellery and watches have returned to the auction circuit as a pair of emerald and diamond ear pendants topped the Saffronart Autumn Online Auction of Fine Jewels and Watches by raking in Rs.85.10 lakh ($197,907).

Moreover, a Patek Philippe mens 18K Yellow Gold Annual Calendar wristwatch was sold for Rs.12.37 lakh ($28,762), a three-strand natural pearl necklace was sold for Rs.24.15 lakh ($56,163) while an emerald and diamond ring fetched Rs.14.46 lakh ($33,631).

Saffronart had offered a range of jewellery exclusively crafted for the Indian market by Fred Leighton and Tiffany.

In a statement issued Thursday, co-founder and president of Saffronart, Minal Vazirani, said: Our autumn online auction of fine jewels 2010 was defined by extremely significant and well-priced coloured gemstones, diamonds and natural pearls. In addition to unique coloured gemstones, signed pieces by Fred Leighton and limited edition wrist and pocket watches were popular.

We were delighted to see the timepieces on offer attracting so much excitement and command prices commensurate with their elegance and importance, Minal Vazirani added.
