NALCO marks 501st alumina shipment from Vizag port

BHUBANESWAR - State-owned National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO) has achieved a milestone by completing its 501st shipment of alumina from Visakhapatnam port in Andhra Pradesh, a senior company official said Thursday.

NALCO is India’s leading manufacturer and exporter of alumina and aluminium. Since inception in 1981 the company through Visakhapatnam port has exported 13.70 million tonnes of alumina, and 1.04 million tonnes of aluminium, the official told IANS.

In 2009-10 alone, the Bhubaneswar-headquartered company has exported 702,554 tonnes of alumina, 146,947 tonnes of aluminium and registered an export earning of Rs.2,209 crore, he said.

The company has been operating its mechanized storage and ship handling facilities in the inner harbour of Visakhapatnam since 1985.

It has been successfully exporting calcined alumina, besides handling export of aluminium and import of project related cargoes, he said.

To mark the 501st alumina shipment, a special function was organized Thursday at the WQ-5 Berth of Visakhapatnam Port, he said.

A.K. Srivastava, chairman cum managing director of NALCO handed over the shipping documents to the representatives of Alaska Metals of Switzerland, who is the buyer for the latest alumina shipment, he said.
