NEW DELHI - Diwali, the festival of lights, is round the corner but the streets of Delhi wear a dull look — thanks to non-functional streetlights. However, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Wednesday blamed private power companies for the problem.

According to MCD, Delhi has three lakh streetlights out of which 80 percent never function. The North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL), BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited are the three discoms which maintain the streetlights in the city.

“We have been getting lots of complaints about non-functional streetlights. As the festival season has started, we have informed the discoms to repair the streetlights,” Jagdish Mamgain, chairman of MCD working committee, told IANS.
