Jagdish Bhagwati to deliver Hiren Mukherjee Lecture

NEW DELHI - Eminent Indian economist Jagdish Bhagwati who teaches at Columbia University will speak on reforms in the country at the third Professor Hiren Mukerjee Lecture in Parliament House Dec 2 that will also be addressed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Known for his works in international commerce and a great votary of free trade, Bhagwati is also a senior resident fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

The theme of Bhagwati’s lecture will be ‘Indian Reforms: Yesterday and Today’, a statement from the Lok Sabha Secretariat said.

Besides Manmohan Singh, the function will also be addressed by Vice President Hamid Ansari and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.

Governors, chief ministers, presiding officers of state legislatures, MPs, judges and a large number of other dignitaries will attend the function in the Central Hall of Parliament House at 6.15 p.m. Dec 2.

Parliament instituted the Professor Hiren Mukerjee Memorial annual lecture in 2008 with a view to create awareness among all stakeholders of democracy on various issues of critical significance to the polity as was envisaged by the late communist leader and scholar who was an MP from 1952 to 1977.

The inaugural lecture was delivered by Amartya Sen in 2008. Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus, who founded the revolutionary Grameen Bank in his country, delivered the second lecture last year.
