Hundreds of flights cancelled as ice storms hit US

WASHINGTON - A snow and ice storm swept across the US South Sunday, spreading power outages and prompting more than 1,400 flight cancellations by Delta, whose hub is Atlanta, Georgia.

The flight cancellations extend through Monday, as rare sub-zero temperatures ranging below minus 14 Celsius settled across the region from Ohio south to northern Alabama.

Heavy snow was expected across northeastern Texas to North and South Carolina, the private forecaster AccuWeather said, with a zone of freezing rain and sleet moving parallel to the snow.

The storm has played havoc with road travel and caused hundreds of accidents across Texas, Louisiana, southern Arkansas, central Mississippi and Alabama, AccuWeather said.

Atlanta was bracing for up to eight cm of snow through Monday.

Unaccustomed to dealing with such weather, the region already struggled through a huge storm in late December that then dumped a blizzard on New York and Boston.

This storm system could also deliver another blizzard to New York and New England by the middle of next week, and it could be joined by a second storm and snow system now icing the Mid-West and moving eastward.
