Japanese shares up on Apple, US gains

TOKYO - Japanese stocks climbed in Wednesday morning trading, boosted by overnight US gains and a robust earnings report from Apple Inc.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average gained 19.95 points, or 0.19 percent, to trade at 10,538.93 while the broader Topix index was up 1.86 points, or 0.2 percent, at 933.44.

Apple, the world’s most valuable technology firm, posted record revenue and profits Tuesday, a day after it announced that its chief executive Steve Jobs was taking a medical leave of absence for unspecified health problems.

On currency markets at 9 a.m. (0000 GMT), the dollar traded at 82.62-65 yen, up from Tuesday’s 5 p.m. quote of 82.53-54 yen.

The euro traded at $1.3378-3383, up from $1.3348-3349 Tuesday, and at 110.53-57 yen, up from 110.16-20 yen.
