Second phase of Census 2011 launched in Maharashtra

MUMBAI - The second phase of India’s population headcount began in Maharashtra Wednesday with enumerators recording information about the state’s first citizen, Governor K. Sankaranarayanan.
An enumerator filled the questionaire based on the replies given by the governor. The questions included name, marital status, religion, occupation and 29 others.
The exercise took place in the presence of Additional Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai Manisha Mhaiskar and Director of Census Operations for Maharashtra Ranjit Singh Deol.
The governor appealed to the people of Maharashtra to extend full cooperation to the census enumerators by furnishing correct information.
Later, Maharashtra Chief Minister Pritiviraj Chavan, who also provided his details, urged the residents of the state to furnish all required information to the enumerators to facilitate the smooth completion of the process.
The decadal exercise, which will be the 15th headcount of India’s population since 1872, is undertaken to create a database on demography, economic activity, literacy and education, housing and household amenities, urbanisation, fertility and mortality, social structure, language, religion and migration.
Census 2011 will continue over the next three weeks to enumerate India’s estimated 1.2 billion population, the world’s second largest after China.
