NEW DELHI - Around 1,000 participants from across India will join in a three-day programme here, including a mass spinning programme, from Tuesday intended to bring Khadi into public discourse and to save it from possible extinction, officials said Saturday.
The programme of ‘Charkha Yoga’ is being organised by the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti (GSDS), which comes under the culture ministry, and aims at giving a new breath of life to the tradition whose prospects have been retarded by modern machines and rapid industrialization, officials said.
“It is a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi as the initiative aims to bring together the spinners, weavers and artisans from the Khadi sector on one platform,” said GSDS director Manimala.
According to officials, the mass spinning will be inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil Feb 22 at Gandhi Smriti. It will be followed by a cultural programme on Kasturba Gandhi’s life titled ‘Peed Parai Jane Re’ at Rajghat.
“We will have an experience sharing interaction with the spinners and the authorities concerned for remedial measures the following morning and later an evening of Sufi songs. A seminar on Khadi will conclude the programme Feb 24,” added Manimala.
