DAKAR, Senegal - An international aid agency says 400 children have died from lead poisoning in northwestern Nigeria and contamination has spread to two more villages.

DARETA, Nigeria - As masked Nigerian environmental experts examine a communal well in a village where more than 60 children were killed by lead poisoning, barefoot kids streaked with dust sit on the contaminated ground, running their hands through the silt and sucking on their fingers.

LAGOS, Nigeria - More than 160 poor villagers from Nigeria's north died from lead poisoning while trying to leach gold from rock deposits, sparking evacuations as health officials try to come to grips with a crisis six months in the making, authorities said Friday.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Three companies that sold lead-based paint and were sued by the state in a landmark case cannot recover money they spent defending themselves in the lawsuit, a judge ruled Tuesday.

BEIJING - At least 94 people living near a lead factory, most of them children, have tested positive for lead poisoning, state media said Monday, prompting authorities to order the closure of the plant.
