AP sources: Long-term care in Senate health bill

WASHINGTON — Democratic officials say the Senate health care bill is likely to include a new long-term care insurance program to help disabled people and the elderly stay in their homes.

The officials say Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is expected to incorporate the voluntary program in legislation to be unveiled as early as Wednesday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because a final decision has not been made.

Known as the CLASS Act, the voluntary insurance program was a top priority for the Sen. Edward Kennedy. It would begin to close a gap in the social safety net that’s received little attention in the health care debate. Fiscal conservatives and insurance companies are opposed.
