Neb. cities could get tax deal for centers, arenas

LINCOLN, Neb. — Cities across Nebraska could get a tax deal similar to the one Omaha got to build its Qwest Center.

A bill introduced to the Legislature on Thursday by Sen. Steve Lathrop of Omaha could help finance the construction of convention centers, sports arenas and amusement parks.

Under the deal given to Omaha and that would be provided to other cities under the bill, state sales tax revenue generated because of the existence of new facilities could be used to help pay off construction bonds.

Some lawmakers have tried and failed in the past to get such an arrangement for other cities in the state, including Lincoln.
