Xerox, Merck, Schlumberger are active movers
NEW YORK — Stocks that moved substantially or traded heavily Friday on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Stock Market:
NYSE:
Xerox Corp., up 87 cents at $11.32
The company’s first-quarter results and outlook topped analyst expectations as revenue from a recently acquired unit picked up.
Hovnanian Enterprises Inc., up 57 cents at $7.14
The homebuilder’s shares surged as the government said sales of new homes jumped 27 percent from February to March.
Schlumberger Ltd., up $4.50 at $72.68
Quarterly profit fell 28 percent, but the oilfield services provider said it sees signs of improving demand for its services.
DeVry Inc., down $4.79 at $69.46
The for-profit education provider’s earnings topped expectations, but student enrollment in its medical school is expected to slow.
NCR Corp., down $1.61 at $14.32
The ATM maker’s quarterly loss grew because of pension expenses and the cost of relocating its headquarters from Ohio to Georgia.
Merck & Co., up $1.69 at $35.46
The drugmaker said the federal health care overhaul will reduce its revenue in the next few years, but maintained its guidance.

Acura Pharmaceuticals Inc., down $1.88 at $4.02
A panel of Food and Drug Administration experts said the company’s experimental painkiller is not effective enough to warrant approval.
Rambus Inc., up $1.52 at $25.04
A gain from a legal settlement with Samsung Electronics Co. helped the memory chip maker return to a profit in its latest quarter.
