KOLKATA - Mercedes Benz India registered 79 percent sales growth between January and June this year, compared to the corresponding period last year, a top company official said here Thursday.

“We sold 2,402 cars in January-June period in 2010, which is a 79 percent growth over the same period last year,” Mercedes-Benz Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Wilfried Aulbur told reporters here.

The company had sold 1,342 cars between January and June 2009.

The total sales for the entire 2009 in India were 3,250 cars across all the segments.

“E-class sales rose by 137 percent at 1,056 units,” he said.

Aulbur was here to launch the E-class coupe.

He said India is still low in luxury car penetration in comparison to Russia and China. But the company sees remarkable growth potential in India.

Between 2005 and 2009, the compounded annual growth rate of the company was 40 percent.

The company is expecting to roll out low-floor city buses in the third quarter of 2011, he said.
