Whitman compares economy in Fresno to Detroit
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman says Fresno is a lot like Detroit, making the comparison in the context of what the recession has done to one of California’s largest cities.
Whitman made the comparison during an editorial board meeting with the San Jose Mercury News, which published excerpts of the interview Wednesday.
She said, “Fresno looks like Detroit. It’s awful.”
The paper reported that the former eBay chief executive was talking about the economic state of the Central Valley city of 500,000. The comment drew criticism from Democratic state Sen. Dean Florez, who called Whitman “out of touch.”
